Why should you build a list in network marketing?

I’m writing this blog with the question of “why should I build a list?” I’ve created a mastermind group with another network marketer to talk about the topic of list building on Sunday, August 5th, 2012 @ 6:30 p.m central time on Google’s Hangout.

I met this networker over the phone the other day. We hit it off so good that we decided to brainstorm to help each other with our business. Before out meeting, we agreed to start our meeting talking about list building. But this wasn’t going to be just any type of mastermind meeting. This meeting was going to be in the form of a “potluck dinner” mastermind where everyone had to bring something to the table.

This led me to start researching the internet on the topic of “list building”. There were millions of websites that came up when I searched the term “list building” in Google. But the question came up for me, “why am I building a list?” I’m a network marketer, I’m not a internet marketer whose looking to build a list for the sake of selling something to a group of people. I have a business opportunity. If I build a list, send them my business opportunity, and they don’t  decide to join, then what?

I don’t know if this question was every answered, which is why I’m writing this blog. I plan on finding the answer.

First, I realized that business, no matter if they are traditional brick and mortar, internet businesses that sell products, or even network marketing businesses,  have a list is an essential part of generating sales.

Let’s take the traditional business. What type of list do they have.

  1. Database of names and phone numbers.
  2. Database of names and mailing addresses.
  3. Database of names, phone numbers, and email addresses.
  4. Rolodex of business cards (these all have the same information as above)

Now, I’ve worked inside Corporate America long enough to know what they do with these list. But, I still asked the question why. The answer came back… To communicate a message.

This is why you want to build a list in network marketing. You have a message that you want to communicate to someone about your opportunity. But, if the only message you have is to about your opportunity, then you will eventually become frustrated because if the message is the same, then people will feel they are being spammed.

Before I go any further, let’s look at the type of lists businesses build.

  1. Phone list
  2. Mailing list
  3. Email list.
  4. Text Message List
That’s it. These list are all built to communicate a message. The question now is, what is the message I want to communicate? A better question would be, what message do you have to communicate?
If the goal is to get someone involved in your network marketing business, then you must figure out who you’re building a list of (people) and why? Is it to offer them your company’s product or services? Is it to offer them an opportunity to earn some extra money? Let’s look at the first question, offering them your company’s products or services.

Identifying the people who will be on your list.

Building this list can be called many things. A few are Target Marketing, Targeted list, Identifying your market, and a few more names. The meaning is out of a population of people, who is more likely to purchase your company’s product or services? Imagine if you were going to a party and you wanted to invite one of your friends to go? Out of your list of friends would you call someone who you know never goes out or doesn’t like parties? No, you would call the friends that have the highest probability of saying yes to your invitation.  It would most likely be those friends that you have went to a party with before.

Let’s take it to the extreme if you’re a beginner. What is you didn’t have a list of party friends? What if you didn’t have a list of friends at all? One idea, is to go to  the party alone this time to the party and start “building a list” of friends who enjoy the atmosphere of going to parties.

I’m liking this idea of parties so I’m going to continue running with it.

The types of parties to attend (Building a list if you have no friends).

There are many types of parties that I can go to if I want to start building a list of friends to invite to the next party. I could go to the clubs. But there are many different types of clubs which play different types of music.

The 30 day Network Marketing Experience – Day 1

I believe in the theory of Tony Robbins use to say, “Success Leaves Clues”. What I don’t remember Tony saying is how to apply theory in practice. But I will.

If a police detective wanted to find a criminal, he would be trained to look for evidence left behind by the person committing the crime. Well, you can apply that when trying to figure out what a person did to achieve a level of success.

That is what I’ve done for the last several days, tracking people who have had some major success in network marketing.

What I found that many had were a connection to My Lead System Pro.  So, I signed up for a two-week trial.

Network Marketing Diary of Eric P. Martin – July 30th, 2012

There is a certain amount of truth that a person will obtain only if they are willing to look past the surface. For some folks, it’s called the “Ah ha” moment. For other observant individuals, it is realizing that things aren’t always as they appear. But for a mathematician, its called statistics.

Now, I’m not a mathematical whiz by far. As a matter of fact, I still struggle with advanced math. However, I did take a statistics course while I was pursuing my associate degree a few years ago. One of the concepts I learned was about population. To be more specific, total population. Within a total population, things will fall within an average. And then, there are items within that population that will deviate from the average. The same concept can be applied to the network marketing business.

The hard truth is, most people, even currently within the network marketing industry will fall within the average population. If we could only secretly peer into “the numbers” of a network marketing company’s financial data, we could observe this statistical truth. If leaders, your mentors would be so bold as to show their genealogy report, I feel my observation would be validated.

A few decades ago, I purchased a copy of a Tom “Big Al” Schreiter’s recruiting book hoping to find some success secret in helping me build my network marketing company. The one thing I remember was the story of how many oysters a person to open to find the pearl. Looking back, that was the secret. How does that apply to statistics? Most of the oysters you pick up to open, will be within the average population. But, there will be some oysters that will have a pearl inside. Those oysters deviate from the average oysters just like those within any industry. This also can be found true in prospecting for leaders.

Building my Network Marketing Business – Web 3.0 – Day 1

After hanging up the phone with my upline, I decided to try an experiment with my network marketing business.

See, I feel, that in today’s world of technology, there is no reason to build a network marketing business the old-fashion way. It seems that those that have been in it for a while can’t wrap their heads around any other way, that having three way calls to bring an expert on the phone with you, invite them to a meeting, build personal relationships by sitting down with your potential business partner.

Today I’m beginning a new website and plan breaking the paradigm. I created a new website, www.homebizexperiment.com to  promote my Legal Shield business.

Preparing to become a lawyer – Taking the LSAT

Today I had a meeting with an attorney regarding a case I have filed against my cab company. After talking with the lawyer, I decided that I was going to become a lawyer myself.

The reason behind my decision was based on the lawyer havign never won a case against the City of Chicago in the adminstrative courts for cab drivers. This fact disturbed me being a cab driver. Our court system, comprised of the law, lawyers, judges, plaintiffs and defendants is corrupt. Injustice seems to filtrat through our legal system. The only was that any change can be made I felt was to become a lawyer myself.

I went immediately to the public library and borrowed a book on taking the LSAT, The Law School Admimission Test.

The book says it takes about 2 months to prepare for the test. I will probably take an entire year.

I went home an answered four of the 25 questions. One of the things I immediately noticed was the test was timed. So, it took me 13:50 to answer four questions. This was an average of 3.37 minutes for each question. The test gives you 35 minutes for 25 questions which averages out to 1.4 minutes per question.

Out of the four questions I did answer, I got 50% correct. After anaylising the questions, I realized that wording played an important role in getting the answer right. Also, the questions had catagories.

Types of questions. Conclusion, Weaken, and Controversy.

Here is a good website that helps prepare for these questions.

Chicago cab drivers explain why they worked during the strike

Making my first documentary film – Post #1

This morning, I picked up where I had left off filling out the form for Indiegogo.  It about 8:00 a.m. my first film project, Cab Slaves went live. I posted on Facebook, I sent invitations to my line producer, assistant producer, assistant, and cinematographer. Only my cinematographer responded.

I have a 120 family and friends of Facebook. I set my minimum contribution on IndieGoGo  at $1.00.   No one has contributed from my network of family and friends on Facebook.

I had scheduled a shoot tomorrow at 5:00 p.m.. It was cancelled due to the fact that cab drivers wouldn’t be available during evening rush hours.

The organization I’m following has a protest scheduled for next week. One of the days, I have have film class so I can’t make it.
