As I reflect on the last 44 days, I think what I’ve learned making the transition to living as an artist is confronting fear. Most of my time has been stabilizing my income with part-time work. I’m still really working 5 days a week, and not bringing any income in from my art, but now I have three days to really work on focusing on my art and bringing in income. When I started, I had no idea how I was going to get my income, but ending the month in June today, I was able to come up with my rent, monthly expenses and financial commitments.
Yesterday, I broke a jogging record.

I decided after listening to one suggestion on how to make money in event photography was to know your camera (he’s absolutely correct) was to challenge myself to learn all the functions of my Nikon 5100 camera.
Surprisingly, Linda.com had a video lesson on the entire camera. But after watching, I still wasn’t completely confident. So, I thought I would blog about about all the function as the best way to learn it. So, let me get started.

Today I made a major breakthrough in my jogging. But more importantly, I made breakthrough mentally. Here are my results. But, I want to note that mentally, I think I’m at exactly where I was when I started my magazine, Music Contacts two decades ago.

It’s been an entire month since I began my journey living as an artist. Right now it’s 3:00 a.m. in the morning and I can’t sleep. My mind is spinning with ideas and thoughts, so I decided to get up and blog.
Here are my stats for income playing on the streets as a musician.
My total for the month is $14.25. Now at first look, one my think that those number are discouraging. However, I see progress.
What I learned Friday playing was that I really need a large number of songs to play as I need to play for different audiences (even on the street). A guy came up to me and asked me to play something. My confidence had me play the only song I knew I could play all the way through (memorized) and that was Harlem, by Bill Withers. The guy was with his girlfriend. When I started playing they really got into the music. He wound up giving me $2.00. I started playing another blues song and it wasn’t really appropriate being that they were together as a couple because the song I played next was It Hurts Me Too. The song is about how this guy is in love with this woman who’s man treats her wrong. Even though I broke my day record, I retreated back home. I wanted to learn some Beatles songs. Hope to go out at least Tuesday.

I came up with an idea last night that I thought I would address in my blog. That is state goals for the week and problems to solve.
1) Turning monthly membership of loft space $80.00 into a profit.
2) Gaining confidence as an event photographer
3) Getting website for photography jobs
Photography Job Challenge
I watched this YouTube video to try and help me make money with Event Photography. While it was a good video with a lot of content, I thought I would post it here and try and work on the ideas suggested.
1) Know your camera. I use a Nikon 5100. This is one of the challenges I have, especially shooting events. I’m going set a goal and learn all the functions of my camera.
I went out and played on the streets yesterday. I earned $3.40. I homeless guy was the first person to put money in my guitar case. He had a bunch of pennies in his hand. I think he was the one who put me over the my record for $3.25 for money earned in one day.
I just finished a workout with runtastic iPhone app and challenge you to beat my time.

I’m down to my last $5.00. I’m still waiting for my restitution check from the city to come, if I even get it. I’m afraid the I.R.S. may get their hands because I received a lien letter two days ago. Great timing.
I’m faced with a decision of playing on the streets or trying to figure out how to eat. I was out last night at midnight, hungry with $2.00 in my pocket. The only thing I could afford was a pound cake which I bought from the gas station.
Mentally, I don’t even want to run this morning. But I think I will.
There are days like this where I feel like throwing in my cards and submit to going back into the work force. I would be miserable, but I wouldn’t be worrying about paying my bills.
Yesterday, I worked a Task Rabbit job for 6 hours. I was dead tired when I came home. Natalie came over to be apart of my class that I wanted to teach. Looks as if I don’t really want to teach this class as if falls into self improvement.
