Stop the Violence Forum at Harold Washington College

The Student Government Association at Harold Washington College sponsored a Stop The Violence forum today for students to participate in due to the escalation of shootings in the Chicago area. According Latonya Vargas,  Vice President of the S.G.A., 247 people were wounded or shot in Chicago between May 26th, and September 1st (Memorial Day and Labor Day.) This was more than double the amount of U.S. military soldiers that were wounded or shot in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined.

Harold Washington students voice their opinions on the root of this epidemic problem to providing some solutions on how to combat it as well. One female student said she witnessed an older woman get “beat down” on the C.T.A.’s  69th street Red Line stop because of the gangs hanging outside without any police being around.

Another student explained how young teenage males are influenced to the gang lifestyle due to the lack of vision for their own future. He shared how difficult it is for teens to value education when they step outside to see their peers driving a Benz with $10,000 rims.

After the morning session was over, HWC students signed a large white cloth hanging on the wall in memorial to friends and family lost from gun violence.

For the second session that took place around 1:00 p.m., Chicago Police Detective, Rose Gordan shared her experience the Gang Specialist for the Chicago area.  Detective Gordan grew up in the Robert Taylor homes. Her professional career started as a teacher for the Chicago Public Schools.

She first shared her story of her own son being a victim of gun violence. She’s grateful that he survived.

Detective Gordan during her presentation talked about a popular fashion statement among young men wearing their jeans low exposing their underwear. She then asked a woman from the audience to spell sagging. She did; S-A-G-G-I-N-G. She asked the same woman to now spell the word backwards leaving out the letter G; N-I-G-G-A-S.

After a short 15 minute documentary on Chicago gangs, Rose Gordan presented some of the weapons that young students are now using in the high school that cost less than $1.00.  They included pipes found in the chemistry lab, bricks wrapped in sport socks, a padlock on a shoe string, rat-tail combs that are bought from the local dollar store, etching cream that contains hydrofluoric acid used to throw on a victim’s face that can potential blind them for life, and a golf club that left someone speechless for life.

Detective Gordan concluded her speech by telling us that their were over 100,000 gang members as young as eight years old in the gang database. In her thirty-three years as a teacher and a Chicago Police officer, she shared that not much has changed in the way of street violence; They were just getting younger.

Giving Praise and Thanks

Today I wanted to start expressing my gratitude, thanks and give praise to HIM which all blessings come from. I thought it would be a good idea to return to the church organization that I was baptized with fourteen years ago; The Chicago Church of Christ (I was actually baptized with the L.A. Church of Christ.)

Upon entering the I.I.T. campus auditorium where service was being held, I felt a sense of completeness that I have never felt before. I finally knew, without question, why I was attending church. Today, like no other day, there was a purpose. To give thanks for the many blessings I’ve received. Especially the wisdom and understanding of gratitude I that was bestowed upon me earlier this week.

Service started off just as it did over a decade ago. First with a few songs of praise. Next would be the testimonial from a member. Today’s service there were two members giving testimonials.  Interestingly enough, one woman who shared her struggles with attending church would be similar to my own story. And after the break, the sermon from the minister.

The Sermon: God’s Will

Today’s sermon was on God’s Will. The message was simple. Our life here on earth is not for ourselves but to give glory and honor to GOD. That is HIS Will. What was interesting to me were a few statements that the minister made that normally, in the past, would have disturbed me to not even come back to this church. However, I had to suspend my judgement to really hear what the message was (a clear example of not shooting the messenger.)

Blessings from GOD

What I have always liked about the Church of Christ is their great fellowship after service. Members always seem to reach out to visitors with a conversation and thanks for joining them in worship. And without fail, today wasn’t any different. Quite a few members reached out to introduce themselves to me. During one of my conversations with a member, I shared with him that I was looking for a part-time job. He mentioned that he knew a great part-time job with flexible hours and he also knew the V.P. of the company. When he told me the name of the company, I mentioned to him that I had just applied to that company only a few days ago. Was this a fortuitous conversation or a manifestation of GOD working? I would like to believe it is the later. In any case, I thank GOD for his blessings and giving me the wisdom to see HIS Greatness.

Lessons in Gratitude

Many people who order their lives rightly in all other ways are kept in poverty by their lack of gratitude. Having received one gift from God, they cut the wires which connect them with Him by failing to make acknowledgment.

It is easy to understand that the nearer we live to the source of wealth, the more wealth we shall receive; and it is easy also to understand that the soul that is always grateful lives in closer touch with God than the one which never looks to Him in thankful acknowledgment.

- The Science of Success – The Secret to Getting What You Want – Wallace D. Wattles

I can’t seem to remember any book on creating wealth I’ve ever read, or church sermon I’ve ever listened to explain the concept of gratitude to wealth with such simplicity. Of course, the possibility of me not being present during that sermon is highly likely too. In any case, “The Science of Success” is turning out to be a real gem of a reading.

After reading the first two chapters, I immediately had drawn up a closed mind to the possiblility of me gaining any new knowledge. I suspected it was going to be another one of those wealth books that focuses on ideas I’ve already read, just regurgitated. I’m so glad I was able to suspend my structure of belief to be able to move past to the third chapter.

Over the Top Marketing

Ok, I admit it. Maybe it was a bit extreme. But how else could I get the attention of the thousands of people who walk to work like robots and carry such gloomy faces on Monday morning? I did make a few people laugh with my Jason mask during the Chicago downtown morning rush hour.

I was standing in the middle of the block on Washington Ave, between Wabash and Michigan as people exited the Metra Station on Washington. Unfortunately for me, someone had the Monday morning blues and didn’t find my attire to be the least bit funny. This wonderful samaritan notified a Chicago Police officer regarding the fright that I placed on them as they walked past me this morning.

A motorcycle Chicago police officer, backed his bike up to read the sign I was holding up. He then got off his motorcycle and asked me to take off my mask before approaching me. I complied with his request. He asked me what I was doing and I politely explained my great marketing idea. I could tell he didn’t share the same enthusiasm as I did. He said I was scaring people. I asked what law was I breaking wearing my mask. I notice his facial muscle’s tightning, giving me an indication I was testing his patience. So rather than argue with the officer, I offered to not wear my mask.

smARTshow Flat Iron Project 2008 showcases remarkably talented artists

Chicago attracts some amazing talented people to the city. Attending the smARTshow on a warm but rainy Saturday night helped validate my theory. On the corner of North , Milwaukee an Damen Avenue houses over three dozen working Chicago artist from around the world. And that night, I became officially anointed by the artist spirit.

The first artist’s work that moved me was Jeffrey Baumgartner. Jeffrey was introduced to the world of painting as an actor four years ago. Working on a very long production, he decided to take a painting class. Inspired by the woman’s figure, this twenty-five year professional actor has now masterfully added drawing and oil painting to his portfolio of talents.

The next Flat Iron art resident that touched me was Lidoska Guietti. An Italian native, Lidoska has been painting for 17 years. A camera-shy, but yet beautiful and talented artist has a unique trademark signature in her works; A small puncture hole that becomes a part of her artwork.

Karen Gagich,  another talented Flat Iron artist, like myself, took art classes at Harold Washington College. Karen entertained me with conversations about the expressions of her paintings; How she sees movement in her works. Her painting seem to display a Picasso-type influence.

Aristeo Jaure, a native from Wyoming, migrated to Chicago to find an outlet for his creative self-expression. A self-taught artist, Aristeos’ paintings display an interesting capture of the faces of society.

Aaron Kobiella, an amazing young artist who has lived as an artist in Hawaii, exhibited some amazing art pieces made from wood. As he tried to explain the process of how he pieces his art together, I noticed the amazing texture of bright colors and interesting shapes of his art. Aarron was gracious enough to encourage me to continue to pursue the artist’s trek that I’ve journeyed on.

Rine Boyer, born in Portland, Oregon exhibited her drawings and paintings on the third floor hallway walls of the Flat Iron Arts Building.  Rine expresses through her artwork the cultural movement that she observes. She takes an iconic symbol and blends that into her art.

Insanity is….

When I walked outside to run this morning, I immediately noticed the overcast of clouds that covered the sky. I didn’t need to look at the weather channel to predict rain today. That would change my day’s plan to sell StreetWise. As I came in from my morning jog, I thought… What if I dedicated the four hours I was going to be standing on the streets of downtown today to my new network marketing business? That idea lead to me fully committing to working at least four hours a day to building my GBG business.

What’s interesting is the work I did today is no different than the work I did for my former company. For four hours, I researched prospects, cold called and put into a communiaction system that included an email and putting into my calender a follow-up call.

After finishing my new part-time business, I left to go to school. I noticed a few people downtown panhandling and selling StreetWise. Then it hit me.. Insanity is doing things over and over again and expecting different results.

Selling StreetWise newspapers, although a great cause to assist those that need immediate cash, can easily become a trap if a StreetWise vendor isn’t careful. Why? Because of the amount of time it takes to earn a decent day’s pay. Although my network marketing business hadn’t generated any cash today, the payoff in terms of time invested and income received will be multiplied many times over.

I decided to create yet another blog to document my network marketing business. I thought it would be a good idea to keep it separate from this blog for recruiting purposes. After I finish designing it, I will post a link to read.

The 25 year-old Problem

The Dream

I knew at an early age I was creative and had a wild imagination. My step-father introduced me to the world of music which I fell in love with. My mother introduced me to the world of art. I fell in love with that too. I used to dream of being able to play guitar for a living. I just didn’t know how that could be done. And no one provide me with an answer to how.

From the time I left the wings of my step-father, I’ve been introduced to many forms of art. Adam Remson, my first editor of my short-lived four issue music publication called Music Contacts introduced me to writing. At Harold Washington College, my photography teacher, Jane Regan introduced me to the world of taking photographs. These were moments of inspiration for me. I found a joy in self-expression.

The challenge for twenty-five years has been turning that joy into a living. This morning I believe I’ve come up with the answer.

The Value of Time

Chicago

The utilization of the twenty-four hours is an important part of the equation.  Yesterday I travel downtown to sell StreetWise. It took four hours to sell 10 papers and make $13.00.  An average of $3.25 per hour. That was the dollar amount that I received in exchange for my time. Today I plan on using my time much differently. For example, I’m writing this blog post which requires a certain amount of my time (which I’m not getting paid for yet.) If I plan on making a living at blogging, an activity I’ve grown to love, I must invest time into it. However the clock is still ticking to meet my financial obligations (rent, phone, electricity, travel and food.)

 Mastering the Art of Balancing

Circus Belly Wien, Holland 2008

Take a look at the guy in this photo. He has five circular items suspended in the air while holding only one in his hand. He has a total of six items he’s managing to balance for an audience. He has without a doubt mastered the art of balancing. Creating the life that you would like to lead is somewhat a similar task. Let say that each item the juggular is holding represents a portion of life; Work, sleep, entertainment, socializing, hobbies, family, commuting, ect.  There is only so much you can fit into a twenty-four hour period. Choosing what activites to put into a day I believe is the secret. We have so many choices we can choose from.

Education

Learning a new skill requires time commitment. Learning a new skill that will provide self-suffiency takes an even greater time commitment. However long the time commitment it is a necessary step and essential part of my equation. Mastering a particular skill that I will enjoy doing and one that will provide employement is where I’ve fallen short.

The Challenge

My challenge has been for twenty-five years how can I pursue a life of self-expression that brings me so much joy while still being able to maintain financial responsibilities. Working a full-time job strips away half of the hours you have available to pursue your goals, dreams and aspirations. While employement does provide security and benefits, a job only has robbed me of my time and potential a A full-time job just isn’t going to work for me.

While selling StreetWise has provide some income, it is not enough to provide self-sufficiency. The income has averaged less than $5.00 an hour. I only need to find a job that pays more that offers the type of flexibility a student needs to still have time to study. The time I invest in work will be the same. What I receive for the hour will be different.

Savings and Investing

Making money work for you. This is the ultimate point that I have to achieve. With the surplus from working, (I’m calling anything over $3.00-$5.00 per hour at this point a surplus) I can use that money to make make money. This concept isn’t new to me but it’s another part of my equation. If I have to work four hours to make $13.00 selling StreetWise, I need to figure out how I can have my money growing to a point that it’s making $5.00 per hour. This can only happen earning more money somewhere else.

So there you have it, my life equation for pursuing my dreams of an artist. Over time I will see if this works. However, remember where you read it first.
